Dundarave To Host 2016 Amateur Golf Championship

 

 

The Prince Edward Island Golf Association has awarded the 2016 P.E.I. Amateur Golf Championship to the Dundarave golf course in eastern P.E.I.. The tournament will be held July 15th to 17th .

2016 marks the return of the Championship to a three round tournament with handicap divisions for both men and women . This year the tournament also moves to new later dates.

“The Association has made a committment to establish the Amateur as the premier golf tournament in the province. It has a long and proud tradition” said P.E.I.G.A. President Jim McQuaid.

“The Amateur not only identifies the provinces’ best men and women golfers it is also the qualifying tournament for the selection of 20 players to represent P.E.I. at the Atlantic Golf Championship in August so there is a lot at stake” said McQuaid.

The Association also announced that the 2017 Island Amateur Championship has been awarded to Stanhope . Future venues will be determined later this fall after golfer response to the new tournament format and dates have been evaluated.

Following last years Amateur the Association consulted with golfers on changes that they would like to see for the tournament . By way of a survey they indicated that they would like to see the status of the tournament enhaced and returned to three rounds. A Committee chaired by noted Island amateur golfer Sherry White oversaw the review of the championship .

“We are looking forward to a great tournament with a full field on a championship quality golf course” said McQuaid.
