Belvedere Ready to Host P.E.I. Amateur Championship

posted Jun 24, 2011 3:09 AM by PEIGA Group Peiga Group

The Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown will be the site of the 2011 P.E.I. Amateur Championship July 2-3rd. The Island’s oldest course will host the prestigious tournament in conjunction with the Prince Edward Island Golf Association.

The Amateur Championship is the pinnacle for amateur players in the province and carries a long tradition. Over the years some of the provinces most prominent golfers have won the tournament.

“The Amateur is the center piece of our amateur golf season. It is always highly competitive and winning the Championship is often the highlight of an amateur career. Given what is at stake the tournament tests both the golfing and mental skills of our best golfers “said Golf Association Executive Director, Ron MacNeill.

What is at stake is not only the tournament trophy but tickets to 5 National Championships including the Canadian Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championship , the Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships as well as the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship. While all P.E.I. team spots will be decided through the tournament players selected for the Men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur will be determined through the season long Moosehead Lite Series however the Island Amateur is worth double qualifying points .

“Belvedere is in outstanding condition and should give the golfers great playing conditions. The 6500 yard par 72 classic layout offers a stern test of golf. The tree lined fairways are narrow and the greens present small targets. Hole number 18 is one of the best finishing holes in the province. The course never fails to deliver exciting, challenging golf and we are very excited to host the Island’s best amateur players, “said Belvedere General Manager Stephen Dowling.

The deadline for entering the 2011 P.E.I. Amateur Championship is Friday, June 24th.

“The field is getting filled up quickly and we have a large contingent of top level players entered from out of province to try and win the prestigious title. If you’re a fan of great golf you should get out to Belvedere to watch the action “said MacNeill .

The 2011 Prince Edward Island Amateur Championship gets underway at 7 am on Saturday July 2nd at Belvedere .

posted May 27, 2011 6:20 AM by PEIGA Group Peiga Group

The Prince Edward Island Golf Association is introducing a new “Player Development Program “ this spring to encourage more people to take up the game and to increase play at Island courses .

The new “Player Development Program “ has two components ; one to get people actively involved and interested in golf and one to develop the Island’s most promising amateur golfers .

“ Tee it Up P.E.I. “ will provide a season long program of golf activities at six regional centers . Activities for new golfers , juniors , women and seniors will be offered at the six centers on a weekly basis . The activities will include instruction , fitness training , rules seminars as well as golf and social events . The schedule of activities taking place at each center will be available through Association’s website www.peiga.ca . The regional centers are Mill River , Summerside , Anderson Creek , Country View , the Canadian Golf Academy and the Divine Nine at Bluebell . People do not have to be members of these clubs to participate in the program ,.

The second component of the new P.E.I.G.A. Player Development Program is directed at the provinces best amateur golfers . This new program will offer elite golfers a chance to take their game to a higher level through advanced instruction . Players accepted into this program will receive instruction in all aspects of the game including fitness , nutrition , course management and the mental side of the game . The intent is to improve the performance of the Island’s best golfers in provincial , regional and national competitions. Details of the “Elite Development Program “ including the application process will be available on the Association’s website .

Executive Director of the P.E.I. Golf Association , Ron MacNeill said that the new Player Development Program illustrates the Association’s commitment to growing the game of golf in the province.

“ Our number one priority is to get more people playing golf and enjoying the health , recreation and social benefits that golf provides . It is a game for all ages and P.E.I. has some of the best facilities in Canada . Our member courses are ready to welcome new golfers and to help them to get into the sport “ said MacNeill.

The new Player Development Program was developed by a committee chaired by P.E.I.G.A. Board member and C.P.G.A. professional Kevin Champion .

“ Our objective was to open the door for new golfers and to provide specialized training for our best golfers . Some of our golfers have great potential but need access to instruction and encouragement to enable them to excel at a high level “ said Champion .

Funding for the new Player Development Program was provided in part by the Sport and Recreation Division of the Province.

Golf Association Announces New Format for Team Selection

posted Apr 26, 2011 10:23 AM by PEIGA Group Peiga Group   [ updated May 24, 2011 5:22 AM ]

The Prince Edward Island Golf Association announced today that a new selection process has been established this for the selection of its Men’s Amateur and Mid- Amateur teams.

Beginning this year these two teams will be determined through the new Moosehead Player’s Series. The Player’s Series is comprised of eight tournaments beginning in May and running through September. At each of these tournaments players are awarded points based on their finish. The points count towards the Moosehead Player of The Year Award. This year the three players who have the most points as of July 11th following the Summerside Lobster Carnival Tournament will be invited to represent the Province at the Canadian Amateur Championship in Winnipeg in August. The top three Mid- Amateur players as of that date will travel to the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship in Oxbridge Ontario in September.

All other provincial teams including the Women’s Amateur and Senior Men and Women’s teams will be selected through player performance at the P.E.I. Amateur Championship that will be held at the Belvedere Golf Club on July 2nd and 3rd. The Provincial Amateur Championship will be worth double points for players competing in the Moosehead Players Series.

“The Competition Committee felt that the results of five tournaments would produce our best, most consistent competitive golfers. They also believe that this format will add new excitement and meaning to the tournaments that make up the Moosehead Series” said P.E.I.G.A. Executive Director Ron MacNeill.

The tournaments that make up the Moosehead Series include:

                          Anderson Creek Open                 May 28-29

                          Avondale Open                            June 4-5

                          Potato Blossom                            June 25-26

                          P.E.I. Amateur Championship      July 2-3

                          Lobster Carnival                           July 9-10

                          Stanhope Open                            August 5-7

                          Jack Frost                                    September 17-18

The Competition Committee also announced that the Island’s three player Mid-Amateur team will include two players over the age of 40.

“Although the age limit for the Mid-Amateurs starts at 25 most provinces have implemented a policy to permit more players over 40 to compete at national tournaments. The objective is to offer top level 40 year old players the experience of playing in a Canadian championship “said MacNeill.

All teams including the Men’s, Women’s, Mid-Amateur, seniors and juniors have been reduced to three players across the country effective this year.

“The Prince Edward Island Golf Association is excited about this new format for the selection of our Amateur and Mid-Amateur Men’s teams. We think it will be fun for fans to follow and that it will provide an interesting new element to our Moosehead Series. Similar to the Fed Ex Cup players can decide which tournaments they want to play. With double points up for grabs the Provincial Amateur Championship at Belvedere will be our major” said MacNeill.

President Cliff Goodwin's Spring Letter 2010

posted Apr 18, 2011 4:26 PM by Kathy Sheppard - PEIGA   [ updated Apr 30, 2011 1:13 PM by PEIGA Group Peiga Group ]

In 2010 the PEIGA had a successful season under the guidance of the new Executive Director Ron MacNeill.  With the support of the active executive and the new look of last year’s programs the Association showed significant improvement.  During the upcoming 2011 season we have as our number one priority the growth of the game.  This is also the main objective of the RCGA/Golf Canada.  Last year the PEIGA was disappointed with the support given by the National Association to provincial teams.  However, this year as they continue to phase out support of provincial teams they have agreed to provide the cost of air fares for all of our seven teams.  We are pleased with the consideration shown by RCGA/Golf Canada and hope that our relationship with them will continue to improve.

To this end of growing the game the PEIGA is planning to introduce a number of new initiatives intended to get more golfers on our member courses this season.  They are:

1.      There will be a special PEI green fee promotion with Moosehead Brewery for August and             September.  There are at least 16 clubs participating in this promotion.

2.      There will be an enhanced “Player of the Year” program supported by Moosehead.                      This would include awards to the Men’s and Ladies’ Amateur and Senior winners.  These             awards  would be presented at the season finale.

3.      There will be an ad campaign featuring member courses to appear in this issue and                     the May issue of Golf News.

4.      There will be a new “grass roots program” that will encourage potential new golfers to                 visit  their local course.  This will be launched in April.

5.      The PEIGA launched a new website on March 1st that focuses on member courses including          links to tee times, an events calendar and map directions.

6.      There will be an enhancement of the junior golf program and a new tour will be organized             for the girls.

7.      A Level 3 training course for local rules officials was started in January.

8.      A new fall championship is planned for senior men and women.

9.      There is collaboration with Holland College to expand the Golf In Schools program.

10.    There will be support for a new “elite” player development program.

            11.    At the present time we have five golf courses participating in a pilot project                                             recognizing PEIGA/Golf Canada members and giving them discounts on green fees during                         specific times.

As you can see the PEI Golf Association has some interesting plans for the 2011 season.  These new initiatives will be detailed at the Annual General Meeting scheduled for Saturday, April 16th at the Tourism and Culinary Institute of Holland College starting at 9:00 am.  Scott Simmons, CEO of the RCGA/Golf Canada, is scheduled to be the guest speaker.  The PEI Golf Association is expecting that many of the course owners and their club members will be in attendance to participate in the discussions about growing the game of golf on PEI.

“This is an excellent partnership for us,” noted Sock MacDonald, Moosehead’s PEI representative. “Our Moose Light product has been enjoyed by golfers for many years so the opportunity to be associated with the PEIGA in a formal way will be beneficial for all those involved.”
